It’s funny how certain things just seem to stick in your memory.
Several years ago I attended a 2 day stock trading seminar in Melbourne. As the course drew to a close the instructor wished us well and to my great surprise - and amusement - presented each of us with one million dollars.
Now unfortunately the million dollars wasn’t real – it was a novelty US Million Dollar Note. But it was a real attention-grabber and I’ll never forget being given my first million.
In fact I’ve still got it and if you’ve ever attended a Gloo Memory Workshop you may have heard me offering a million dollar reward to anyone who can beat the current Australian Memory Record by reciting Pi to over 4,400 places without error. Here are a few digits to get you started...

Anyway, people loved the Million Dollar Note so much that that we decided to order several thousand of them to give out at our in-house and public workshops.
Unfortunately finding an Aussie version of the Million Dollar Note was no easy task.
After much searching and frustration we did eventually find the elusive note, designed and produced - oddly enough - by a religious organisation, and I ordered some.
But the quality of the print wasn’t great and I couldn’t help but notice that on the back there was a message threatening the recipient of the note with eternal damnation.
Hmm, not quite appropriate for our purposes.
What also struck me was how many US websites there were marketing the Million Dollar Note as a lead-generating, response-boosting tool.
Apparently many businesses include a Million Dollar Note with their leaflets, brochures and direct mail campaigns to grab the attention of prospects and boost response rates.
Others use the notes to say ‘Thanks A Million!’ to existing customers. Sales people send Million Dollar Notes to potential clients to warm them up before calling to make an appointment.
And other professionals simply give them out at functions and events as a conversation-starter and to be remembered.

You can see that the many, many hours Chris put in have paid off in a unique and eye-catching design…
We then printed the notes on a non-tear, plastic paper similar to bank notes – though we used a different texture and weight to ensure that they wouldn’t be mistaken for real money.
